Folkestone to Dover
A monumental coastal montage celebrating the Kent coastline, from Folkestone East to the White Cliffs of Dover.
The culmination of seventeen years of printmaking.
Folkestone to Dover is my largest and most ambitious linoprint to date. Developed over nine months through photography, observational drawing, composition studies, carving and countless proof prints, this monumental A1 linocut brings together the defining landmarks, wildlife and atmosphere of Kent's eastern coastline into a single composition.
Beginning at Folkestone Harbour and stretching towards the White Cliffs of Dover, the print celebrates the iconic lighthouse, working fishing boats beneath circling gulls, the chalk cliffs and rich foliage of The Warren, and the dramatic coastline that has inspired generations of artists and travellers.
Printed from multiple hand-carved lino blocks, each impression is built through numerous individually printed layers using traditional oil-based inks, rainbow rolls, transparent overlays and hand-developed texturing techniques.
As the work evolved, it became clear that its monumental scale and technical complexity deserved a different approach. Rather than producing a conventional numbered edition, Folkestone to Dover will become a series of one-off original works. Each impression will explore its own colour palette, layering and hand-finished details, making every large-format print an individual piece with its own character.
Alongside these unique works, a hand-printed limited edition on Japanese paper is currently in development, offering collectors a more intimate interpretation of the composition while celebrating the traditional craft of relief printmaking.
