A monumental coastal montage celebrating the Kent coastline and Folkestone East looking over the Warren and on to Dover.
The culmination of seventeen years of printmaking.
Folkestone to Dover is my largest and most ambitious linocut to date. Developed over nine months through photography, observational drawing, composition studies, carving and countless proof prints, this monumental A1 edition brings together the defining landmarks, wildlife and atmosphere of Kent's eastern coastline into a single hand-printed work.
Beginning at Folkestone Harbour and stretching towards the White Cliffs of Dover, the composition celebrates the iconic lighthouse, working fishing boats surrounded by circling gulls, the chalk cliffs and rich foliage of The Warren, and the dramatic coastline that has inspired generations of artists and travellers.
Printed from multiple hand-carved lino blocks, every impression is built through five or more individually printed layers using traditional oil-based inks, rainbow rolls, transparent overlays and hand-developed texturing techniques. Each layer must be precisely registered by hand, allowing depth, light and atmosphere to emerge gradually through the printing process.
To produce a work of this scale, the edition will be printed on a specialist A0 fine art relief press before the final layers are completed live at The Grand, Folkestone (Autumn 2026). Every print will be individually signed, numbered and hand-finished by the artist.
Full Description
For almost a year, Folkestone to Dover has occupied every stage of my printmaking practice—from walking the coastline with my camera and sketchbook to refining the composition, transferring the design, carving multiple lino blocks and developing complex layered printing techniques.
Drawing together seventeen years of experience, this print represents the most technically ambitious work I have created. Rather than depicting a single viewpoint, it weaves together the defining features of Folkestone's eastern coastline into one carefully composed panorama: the harbour lighthouse standing proudly above the sea, fishing boats returning home beneath wheeling gulls, the untamed beauty of The Warren and, beyond, the unmistakable White Cliffs of Dover rising above the Channel.
Every carved line has been cut by hand. Every colour has been built through multiple passes of the press. Rainbow rolls create seamless transitions of light across the composition, while textured layers introduce movement to the sea, sky and landscape. The result is a print that rewards close inspection, revealing new details and subtle variations throughout.
This edition is more than a celebration of place—it is a celebration of traditional craftsmanship. Created entirely through hand-carving and relief printing, Folkestone to Dover stands as a milestone within my practice and a tribute to one of Britain's most remarkable coastlines.
